Letter from John Davies |
Diolch am y cyfle i rhoi fy sylwadau [Thank you for giving me the opportunity to submit comments].
I note your phrases "to deliver for Wales" and "cynrychioli Cymru yn ddigonol" ["sufficiently representative of Wales"] (which is not quite the same as "is the system representative").
I think the National Assembly can speak out for the pobl gwerin [the common people], even though its small powers have local government character. On the symbolic level Rhodri Morgan was right to speak out for the WRU to put its house in order, and it was wrong to retort that the WRU is a private concern, because Welsh rugby has been an institution for a century.
On the broad scale the Assembly should speak out for the Welsh families who lost livelihoods in numerous commercial closures this past year.
Commercial concerns again are a private matter, however, De Gaulle stopped Citroen being bought out by the Italians.
Also the cefn gwlad farmers [farmers of rural areas] need cefnogaeth [support] with regard to the formulation of European Community regulations.
Maybe the Assembly only has powers to create a youth scheme here and a social project there, but if it speaks out on the major national issues it would represent the pobl gwerin [the common people] and win more popularity.
As to proportional representation, it is necessary to every self-respecting democracy.
