Memorandum from the Welsh Conservative Party
|
| The
Welsh Conservative Party fully endorses the submission of Nicholas
Bourne AM, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly
to the Commission on the National Assemblys powers and Electoral
Arrangements and wishes to stress the following points: |
| 1.
There should be no alteration to the number of Assembly Members |
| 2.
There should be no change to the present electoral arrangements |
| 3.
We believe that the office of the Secretary of State for Wales must
be retained |
| 4.
The National Assembly should employ to better effect for the people
of Wales, the powers with which
it is currently invested. It certainly does not require additional
primary legislative powers, or
taxation powers |
| 5.
The Welsh Conservative Party did not support the creation of the Assembly,
however, by a tiny majority the
people of Wales voted for it |
| The
party accepts the current settlement and is committed to making the
National Assembly work but is totally opposed to its being granted
further powers. |
